# Scam Merchants And Other Disasters
## Book Information:
- **Author:** Terry Pratchett
- **Series:** Discworld #31 (The Science of Discworld #1)
- **Pages:** ~130 pages
- **Publisher:** Corgin Books (2001)
- **Source:** Library (Borrowed)
## Review:

This book was written as part of an effort by Terry Pratchett (and others) to raise money (and awareness) about literacy charities (and others). It’s one part science non-fiction (written by Professors Jack Cohen & Ian Stewart), one part Discworld story (written by Terry Pratchett), one part humor about science fiction & fantasy tropes.
The science non-fiction parts are presented as though they were being discussed by wizards at Unseen University (in Ankh-Morpork). The wizards discuss concepts like Big Bang Theory (including alternate theories), evolution & natural selection & co-evolutionary arms races between species; how living organisms need complex systems (like DNA) so they can replicate themselves; what might have happened before there was life; how we might go about detecting life on other planets; how language works; how humans became intelligent; what makes humans special; why humans need stories; why humans believe things that aren’t true; what happens when humans meet aliens (both literal & figurative); etc.
The Discworld story parts are presented as though they were being written down by members of Ankh-Morpork’s “Wizards’ Committee” (which includes Rincewind). The story involves Rincewind & Twoflower going out into Discworld’s countryside while Wizards at Unseen University try to figure out what happened after they accidentally created a baby universe inside their laboratory.
The humor parts poke fun at tropes found in science fiction & fantasy stories – like giant space ships that can destroy planets but have no way to get off their launch pads; aliens who speak perfect English without learning it; space explorers who land on planets full of harmless animals but end up getting eaten by them anyway; magic items that make people immortal but turn them into monsters instead; etc.
Overall this book was interesting enough – especially if you’re interested in science or fantasy/science fiction tropes – but I wouldn’t say it was essential reading even if you’re a fan of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld books or Ian Stewart’s popular science books.
## Notes:
I took notes while reading this book so I could remember all its interesting ideas better later on! Here are my notes:
### Science Non-Fiction Parts:
- Big Bang Theory – how did everything start? what was before? etc.
- Evolution & Natural Selection – how do species change over time? why do some survive while others don’t? etc.
- Co-evolutionary Arms Races – how do predators & prey evolve together? why do some species develop defenses while others don’t? etc.
- Complex Systems – why do living things need complex systems like DNA so they can replicate themselves? etc.
- Life Before Life – what might have happened before there was life? etc.
- Detecting Life On Other Planets – how might we go about finding alien life forms? etc.
- Language – how does language work? why do humans need language? etc.
- Intelligence – how did humans become intelligent? what makes us special? etc.
- Stories – why do humans need stories? why do we believe things that aren’t true? etc.
- Humans & Aliens – what happens when humans meet aliens (both literal & figurative)? etc.

## Book Information:
- **Author:** C.S. Lewis
- **Series:** None
- **Pages:** ~240 pages
- **Publisher:** MacMillan Publishing Company (1952)
- **Source:** Library (Borrowed)
## Review:

This book was originally published as four separate radio broadcasts during World War II (1941–42). It was later compiled into one volume with some additional material added by C.S. Lewis himself.
The book begins with an introduction that explains why Lewis wrote it: He wanted to explain Christianity simply enough so that anyone could understand it without needing prior knowledge or training.
From there he goes on to discuss topics like morality (“The Law Of Human Nature”), faith (“The Great Myth”), salvation (“Christian Behavior”), heaven & hell (“Heaven And Hell”), prayer (“Prayer”), etc.
Overall this book was very interesting & thought-provoking even if you’re not religious yourself because it presents arguments both pro & con regarding various aspects related specifically only Christians themselves may disagree about among each other such as whether Jesus Christ really rose from death after being crucified upon Golgotha hill outside Jerusalem city walls nearly two thousand years ago now!
