I knew that it would be difficult being so far away from home (especially being away from my girlfriend), but I also knew that it would be an experience like no other. This trip was not just about seeing beautiful sights or tasting delicious foods (although those were big parts of it), but more importantly it was about getting out of my comfort zone. ### The Plan My original plan was much more ambitious than what I ended up doing. I wanted to go all around South America including Brazil and Colombia. This would have been over three months long instead of one month. I decided against this because I had never been anywhere else outside North America before. I didn't want such a long time away from home without knowing what I was doing. ### Getting Started As I mentioned above my original plan was much more ambitious than what I ended up doing. The reason why I started with Chile was because it's only three hours ahead of Pacific Time. This meant that I wouldn't have jet lag when I arrived. ![alt text]({{ site.url }}/assets/apprentice/IMG_1420.jpg "Chile") I spent two weeks traveling around Chile including San Pedro de Atacama, Puerto Varas (where I got scammed by some locals), Santiago de Chile, Valparaiso (where I spent my birthday) and Puerto Montt (where I met up with some friends). ### Getting Lost After Chile came Argentina where I spent about a week going through Buenos Aires, Mendoza (where I tasted some amazing wine) and Bariloche (where I hiked up Mt. Fitz Roy). From there it was off to Bolivia where I spent another week going through Uyuni, La Paz (where I got lost trying to find my hostel) and Copacabana. ![alt text]({{ site.url }}/assets/apprentice/IMG_1430.jpg "Bolivia") ### Going Home From Bolivia it was off to Peru where I spent another week going through Cusco, Machu Picchu (which was amazing) and Lima before heading back home. Overall it was an amazing experience that taught me so much about myself. I'm already looking forward to my next trip! ### Takeaways 1. It's important not only knowing where you're going but also how you're going there. 2. If you're traveling solo try meeting up with other people who are also traveling solo. You'll meet so many interesting people who are also out there exploring the world. You'll also have someone who can help if something goes wrong (like getting lost). 3. Make sure that you have enough money saved up beforehand so that you don't have any financial worries while traveling. 4. Don't be afraid of getting lost! Sometimes getting lost leads you down paths that would have otherwise been missed.<|file_sep|># bush.github.io<|repo_name|>aaronbush/bush.github.io<|file_sep|>/_posts/2015-03-31-hackathon.md --- layout: post title: "Hackathon" date: 2015-03-31 09:00 categories: - misc tags: - travel --- It's been quite awhile since my last blog post so let me catch you up! I've been working on some cool stuff lately including starting my own company called [Hacker Gator](https://www.hacker-gator.com). We're currently building an app called [Hackathon](https://www.hackathon.com) which helps students find hackathons near them. ![alt text]({{ site.url }}/assets/hackathon/hackathon.png "Hackathon") ### Why Hackathons? Hackathons are events where programmers get together over a weekend (or longer) and build something awesome. They're usually organized by universities or companies who want to promote innovation within their community. There are many benefits from attending hackathons: * Meet new people who share similar interests as yourself. * Learn new skills by working with others who have different backgrounds than yours. * Get experience working on real-world projects instead of just doing homework assignments or working at internships/jobs full-time all year round. ### What We're Building We're building an app called Hackathon which helps students find hackathons near them based on location, date/time preferences etcetera... The app will also allow users: * To create accounts so they can save their favorite hackathons. * To invite friends/follow other users who attend/have attended similar events before. * To search through past/present/future hackathons using various filters such as topic/theme/language etcetera... * To see what other people think about each event by reading reviews/ratings left by attendees/past participants etcetera... ### How You Can Help If you're interested in helping us out please reach out via email ([[email protected]](mailto:[email protected])) or Twitter ([@hackathonapp](https://twitter.com/hackathonapp))! We'd love nothing more than having more people join us on this journey towards building something great together.<|file|repo_name|>aaronbush/bush.github.io<|file_sep|>/_posts/2015-02-25-a-new-year.md --- layout: post title: "A New Year" date: 2015-02-25 09:00 categories: - misc tags: - travel --- Happy New Year! It's been quite awhile since my last blog post so let me catch you up! I've been busy working on [Hacker Gator](https://www.hacker-gator.com) which is an online community where students can connect with each other based on shared interests such as programming languages/frameworks/tools etcetera... We launched Hacker Gator back in November 2014 after spending several months building out our platform using Ruby on Rails & MongoDB. Since then we've seen great growth both organically & through word-of-mouth marketing efforts resulting in over 1K users joining our community within just two months! ### What's Next? We plan on continuing our growth trajectory by adding more features & improving existing ones while also focusing heavily on user acquisition strategies such as: * Social media marketing campaigns targeting specific demographics/geographic regions etcetera... * Email newsletters containing helpful tips/tricks related specifically towards programming languages/frameworks/tools etcetera... * Blog posts covering topics related specifically towards programming languages/frameworks/tools etcetera... In addition we'll also be launching our mobile app soon which will allow users access all features available through our web application directly from their phones/tablets without needing any extra software installed first!
