As the Pittsburgh Steelers dive into offseason mode, roster evaluations are at the forefront of their priorities. The team’s first move: assess their pending free agents. In an ideal scenario, they’d have enough cap space to retain key players and let others go, with hopes of securing compensatory draft picks in the process.
However, not all free agents are equal. There are multiple types of free agents, each with different rules and conditions. Here’s a breakdown of the main categories:
Types of Free Agents
Unrestricted Free Agents (UFA):
A player with four or more accrued seasons whose contract has expired. These players are free to negotiate and sign with any team.
Restricted Free Agents (RFA):
A player with three accrued seasons whose contract has expired. While they can negotiate with any team, their original team has the right to offer various qualifying tenders. These tenders give the original team the right of first refusal and/or draft-pick compensation if they choose not to match an offer. If the team withdraws the tender, the player becomes an unrestricted free agent.
Exclusive Rights Free Agents (ERFA):
A player with fewer than three accrued seasons and an expired contract. If the original team offers a one-year contract at the league minimum (based on the player’s credited seasons), the player cannot negotiate with other teams.
