2024 Steelers 7-Round Mock Draft: Balancing Dreams and Realistic Expectations

Dreams vs. Reality: Steelers 2024 7-Round Mock Draft

Every year, I bring you a Steelers-specific “Dreams vs. Reality” mock draft, an exercise where we compare the players I hope the Steelers select with the realistic picks they are likely to make. This fun tradition gives perspective and helps manage expectations ahead of the NFL Draft. If you’re joining me for the first time, this is a great way to dive in and keep it all in balance. Feel free to share your own dream and reality mock drafts in the comments below!

Dream Mock Draft

Round 1, Pick 20 – Taliese Fuaga | OT | Oregon State

Projected between picks 10-20, Fuaga could fall into Pittsburgh’s lap if five quarterbacks go early. Fuaga’s power and nastiness in the run game make him an intriguing prospect, despite minor concerns with arm length and foot speed. He’s an ideal right tackle, though he could play on the left side if necessary.

Round 2, Pick 51 – Xavier Legette | WR | South Carolina

Legette reminds me of A.J. Brown with his combination of size, strength, and ability to make tough catches. A physical, explosive receiver, Legette could be a game-changer for the Steelers, excelling in contested catches and blocking, though his route-running could use refinement.

Round 3, Pick 84 – Mike Sainristill | CB | Michigan

Though likely off the board by this pick, Sainristill’s ball skills and clutch playmaking could make him an intriguing late-round steal. With solid coverage instincts, Sainristill has the tools to thrive in the slot.

Round 3, Pick 98 – Sedrick Van Pran | C | Georgia

A true hidden gem, Van Pran’s explosive athleticism and quickness make him a top-tier center prospect. His ability to pull and excel in zone blocking schemes adds tremendous value, and his upside is immense.

Round 4, Pick 119 – Malik Mustapha | S | Wake Forest

Mustapha’s athleticism and strong safety instincts make him a Day 3 sleeper with the potential to develop into a starter. Though not the most instinctive, his ability to tackle and cover tight ends should help him contribute in the NFL.

Round 6, Pick 178 – Jonah Elliss | EDGE | Utah

Elliss is a relentless pass rusher with a high motor, perfect for a situational role. His lack of strength limits him as a run defender, but his pass-rush potential makes him a developmental steal.

Round 6, Pick 195 – Ainias Smith | WR | Texas A&M

Smith’s playmaking ability and versatility stand out, even if his athletic testing wasn’t ideal. With sharp routes and incredible vision after the catch, Smith could offer significant value as a return man or versatile offensive weapon.

Reality Mock Draft

TRADE:
Steelers trade Picks 20, 84, and a 2025 3rd round pick for 49ers’ Pick 31 and WR Brandon Aiyuk.

Round 1, Pick 31 – Zach Frazier | C | West Virginia

Frazier is the perfect fit for Pittsburgh’s legacy at center, offering tremendous physicality, intelligence, and leadership. A former wrestling champion with great hands and strength, Frazier brings solid consistency to the interior offensive line.

Round 2, Pick 51 – Braden Fiske | DL | Florida State

Fiske’s motor and athleticism make him a steal in the second round. A high-effort player with excellent technique and versatility, Fiske can contribute at multiple positions along the defensive line.

Round 3, Pick 98 – Blake Fisher | OT | Notre Dame

Fisher has immense upside, with the potential to develop into a top-tier tackle. While not the most polished, his length and athleticism give him great potential for growth, especially in a Steelers offense focused on blocking schemes.

Round 4, Pick 119 – Luke McCaffrey | WR | Rice

A developmental prospect with strong NFL bloodlines, McCaffrey has good speed and catching ability, though his route-running needs refinement. As a long-term project, he has the potential to develop into a key contributor.

Round 6, Pick 178 – Shon Stephens | CB | Ferris State

Stephens’ quickness and instincts make him a strong nickel corner option. Despite his smaller frame, his coverage skills and NFL pedigree make him a valuable late-round pick.

Round 6, Pick 195 – Jaden Crumedy | DL | Mississippi State

A solid run defender with good pad level and power, Crumedy adds depth to Pittsburgh’s defensive line. Though not a standout prospect, he fits the mold of a traditional Steelers defensive lineman.
