“Bitter old clown,” “How succulent,” “His opinion is worthless” – Tom English laments a season filled with shattered hopes.

”Rubbish, Waterlogged, Incompetent” may not be the title of Tom English’s autobiography, but it certainly encapsulates his latest podcast. In this reflection, the BBC’s Chief Sports Writer looks back on yet another season of shattered hopes and disappointment in Scottish football. After backing the Micky Beale revolution, English swiftly switched allegiance to a “Proper Football Manager.” However, the season ended with Celtic clinching two trophies in less than two weeks, solidifying their dominance in Scottish football.

For Tom English, it was another season of disappointment, beginning with a dramatic snub when Celtic excluded BBC Scotland from media conferences after their star player ruffled feathers on a podcast aimed at an Irish audience. Once again, English found little of substance outside Gorgie Road, with no job offers from the Irish rugby scene. He was left with just 12 paydays to console himself, earning him the affectionate nickname “House Paddy” from his BBC Scotland colleagues.

Throughout the winter, there were brief moments of hope and excitement, but as spring arrived, so did Celtic at the critical point of the season, leaving James Tavernier and the BBC Scotland Sports Desk bitterly disappointed once again.

Spending most Saturday afternoons in the studio with Kenny Macintyre felt like the lowest point in a journalist’s career. Attempting to reinvent himself as a shock-jock personality was a tall order when he had long been the subject of ridicule after more than a decade of following orders from Ibrox.

This season has seen many commercial media outlets forced to scale back on jobs and services. Fortunately for English, the BBC TV licence provides a cushion from reality, with an upcoming trip to Germany where he’ll be scavenging for second-hand stories and eagerly awaiting any transfer news from Ibrox and Tynecastle.
