Nils Koppen’s promotion to Technical Director has been linked to the disastrous recruitment seen over the past two transfer windows, which has left Phil Clement clinging to his job. With another domestic setback looming, it’s expected that fans will be out on the streets demanding change.
With no CEO or permanent Chairman in place, it’s safe to assume that Gilligan signed off on Koppen’s promotion.
The Record Hotline, a platform often used for reporters to voice their opinions, today reflects the growing frustration over this internal appointment, which many find hard to justify.
Discussing the move, the Hotline today shared strong opinions:
Koppen, formerly the director of recruitment, will now have an overarching role that includes overseeing the club’s transfer strategy, as well as managing the men’s academy, medical team, football operations, and performance and analysis departments.
Jimmy Mac from Glasgow expressed his discontent with the decision, stating, “Nothing the Rangers board does surprises any fan anymore, and the appointment of Nils Koppen as technical director is yet another colossal failure by a temporary chairman who couldn’t organise a free drink in a brewery.”
He continued, “It’s hard to admit, but that board of inept individuals is like the lunatics running the asylum. If they’re allowed to continue their disgraceful failures, the club and team will keep spiraling downward, a mess of their own making.”
Robert Livingstone from Palm Beach echoed similar frustrations, adding, “What a joke—Koppen! From a terrible scout to technical director, this may be the final straw of an already bad season. He knows nothing about signing players, has brought in some real duds, and has no clue what Rangers stand for.”
He concluded, “The fans know that former Rangers players with the right knowledge of the club and what it takes to succeed should have been brought in. Koppen is just a smart opportunist who’s wormed his way into the job. Another Gilligan blunder.”
On December 5, the Ibrox Tribute Act will hold their AGM, with Gilligan expected to remain Chairman. He is likely to face the brunt of angry fan criticism ahead of the upcoming doubleheader against Spurs and Celtic.
