Internal Push Intensifies to Replace Tavernier as Captain

Ian Durrant has become involved in the campaign aimed at forcing James Tavernier out of Ibrox.

Over the weekend, Connor Goldson discussed the pressures that led to his exit from Ibrox, despite still having two years remaining on his four-year contract.

Yesterday, Durrant was seen promoting lottery tickets to raise funds for the Murray Park youth teams.

The theme of the lottery tickets, centered around “Legends,” naturally sparked discussions about leadership within the Ibrox dressing room during a challenging period for the club.

James Tavernier’s constant, frustrated comments have only added to the discontent among the loyal supporters, many of whom are fed up with seeing Daizen Maeda dominate their captain.

Earlier this summer, the Daily Record prematurely reported that Jack Butland would take over as captain, only to retract the claim. It quickly became clear, however, that efforts were underway to move Tavernier off the payroll.

Yesterday, a more subtle approach was taken, with Ian Durrant suggesting John Souttar as a potential captain in the Daily Record:

“Previously, Souttar’s career was marred by setbacks, particularly his Achilles injuries. But I’ve watched him for Scotland and for Rangers, and he’s been outstanding.

If Tav were to step out of the team, it looks like Philippe Clement could turn to Souttar or Jack Butland to pass on the armband. He’s an experienced player who could handle the responsibility. He’s stood tall for Scotland, and I hope he continues that form for Rangers.”

With no other offers on the table, Tavernier is likely to stay on, collecting the remainder of his wages. However, with Neraysho Kasanwirjo suffering what looks to be a serious knee injury while playing for the Netherlands U-21 side, Philippe Clement’s options at right-back could be significantly reduced.
