Ex-Mag Named ‘Top Contender’ for Man City Position Following Surprise Departure

Fabrizio Romano reports that former Newcastle United player Hugo Viana is now the frontrunner to take over as Manchester City’s new director of football after the announcement of Txiki Begiristain’s departure. Begiristain joined Manchester City in 2012 and was instrumental in bringing Pep Guardiola to the club, having previously played alongside him at Barcelona and for the Spanish national team.

Viana, who made 56 appearances for Newcastle United, has been excelling at Sporting Lisbon, where he has played a key role in acquiring talents like Viktor Gyokeres and Ousmane Diomande. Earlier this year, he was also linked to a similar position at Newcastle, but Paul Mitchell ultimately took over for Dan Ashworth.

Manchester City is clearly impressed with Viana’s contributions and is keen to integrate him into their ongoing structural changes at the club’s hierarchy. This development follows positive updates in City’s legal battle with the Premier League, though both sides have experienced some victories.
